St Andrews Village is situated in Glendowie, Auckland on 14 hectares of tranquil park-like grounds. St Andrews Retirement Village provides a full range of temporary and permanent care options as well as fully independent living choices and is owned and operated by an independent charitable trust.
Many of the risk products that we looked at possibly introducing had a very narrow view and almost distilled everything down to just heath and safety compliance.
For many years, our management conversations around risks have been entered into vast, sterile, spreadsheet matrixes which proved next to impossible to distill any meaningful information from or realistically gauge what the biggest risks to our organisation really were. Like most organisations, we were flying somewhat blind.
Our Conversion to the FlipView really set the tone around not only the biggest risks that we face, but has also helped crystalise the many opportunities we face for growth through the use of clear dashboards. The 'light bulb' moment for us came when you suddenly see all of the critical factors across the entire breadth of your organisation concisely laid out on one screen.
The clarity with which the information is presented makes it easy to extract the relevant parts to inform a variety of discussions, be it day to day management of risks with staff, governance conversations or helping to inform strategic opportunities and creating action plans to achieve them. What we ended up with is a risk management (and opportunity) pathway that has complete buy in by the entire Exec Team and Board of Trustees. In essence, we have a system that we can use on a regular basis to help check the overall health of the business, and what we need to change, as opposed to an old series of spreadsheets which were created because we had to, and then promptly forgotten as they were too difficult to understand.
The FlipView is and extremely powerful piece of software, a genuine aid to businesses as opposed to a 'tick box' compliance tool. It clearly does risk well, but also actively assists with strategic planning and direction.
Whilst fairly new to Flipview, we’ve found it to be immediately valuable as it illuminates and aggregates risks and opportunities, many of which were not visible or top of mind for our SLT. The staff survey feature was immensely useful to surface team sentiment and a great pulse check on team culture.

When we needed to have a significant review and update of our risk framework, including updating the base data through a questionnaire process, it was hard to find a willing internal candidate for the work. When Ben was recommended to us he immediately provided an energy and discipline to the data collection, recording and analysis process which was impressive. As a result he has now provided us with a fantastic database to build our new reporting on. Being a software company ourselves we saw that the software solution that Ben has developed could then provide the tool for better reporting to the Board and management along with a process to regularly update the data in a structured way.
The Flipview has played a key role in reaching consensus around our key risks and opportunities and helped us to rise above the details (and see the wood from the trees) which has in turn influenced both short and long term strategic planning. It has brought a significant amount of clarity. The tools ability to automatically aggregate and report large data sets is phenomenal.
The Flipview for us has become an integral tool for strategic planning. It offers a really nice and straightforward mechanism to translate our strategy (including the internal and external risk factors to achieving it) to a format that our board and management team can both understand.
Identification and categorisation of risk is an inherently subjective process. Flipview has been invaluable it bringing together our Executive team and delivering a quality output. We look forward to deepening our relationship with Flipview as we move into our strategic planning cycle.
